SMM12, 20 March: Vedanta Ltd. aims to limit its alumina imports to 500000 tons per year by fiscal year 2021, according to a report. According to the record, the company imported more than 2 million tons of alumina to power smelters in Jharsuguda and Korba because it did not have sufficient bauxite resources of its own. Vedanta also relies on imported bauxite to feed Lanjigarh's alumina refineries. However, the company confirmed that it would increase Lanjigarh production capacity to 6 million tons per year. The expansion of the smelter is expected to reduce Vedanta's dependence on imported alumina, thus reducing the cost of aluminum production
An executive at Vedanta Co., Ltd., said imports are expected to gradually fall to 500000 tons by mid-2020. He also said that sharp cuts in alumina imports would make Vedanta's aluminum costs competitive. Vedanta's cost of smelting aluminium currently hovers around $2000 a tonne, in line with the production costs of its peers, (Nalco) and Hindalco Industries.
As a result of its focus on structural cost reduction, Vedanta aims to cut its aluminium manufacturing costs to $1500 per tonne from $2018 per tonne in the second quarter of the fiscal year.
